Launched in October 2013, SOS: Showcase of Original Shorts is Upstart’s celebration of that little-known, underappreciated art form, the short play. Recently, Upstart founder Joel Trinidad partnered with current Upstart Artistic Director Giselle Töngi to produce the first version of SOS at Caixa Bar and Restaurant in Makati. The same five short plays featured during that highly successful run—The Legion, Blind Date, Deathly Sorry, The Last Bullet, and Witchslap—were recently performed again at Rastro in Burgos Circle in BGC, the new home of SOS and other small Upstart projects.
And on July 17 and 24, 2014, Rastro will present SOS 2, which will feature six new short plays, all written and directed by Trinidad. These plays are:
The Interview, in which a female reporter interviews a famous superhero; Eternity, in which a departed soul encounters the afterlife; Pyramid Scam, in which an overbearing woman refuses to believe a magician has sent her husband to Egypt; What The Luck, in which a superstitious man faces the consequences of a broken mirror; Zandar The Magnificent, in which a fake psychic tries to scam a lonely woman; and Next, in which a man is exposed to a substance that may or may not have given him super powers.
SOS 2 stars, in alphabetical order, Mako Alonso (Carrie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert), Arya Herrera (Sandosenang Sapatos, Alice in Wonderland), and Bibo Reyes (The Addams Family, Rock of Ages).
