Ever wonder why men don’t seem to listen? Or why women can’t parallel park? Wonder no more! Rob Becker’s Defending the Caveman, the longest-running one–man comedy show in Broadway history, is back to demystify the opposite sex. Dubbed “hysterically funny” by The New York Times, the show has sold over 8 million tickets in 45 countries and has been translated into over 30 different languages. And now it returns to the Manila stage!
Defending the Caveman deals with the battle of the sexes: the stereotypical–and yet, more often than not, indisputably true–differences between men and women. Why, for instance, do men seem hypnotized by TV? Why do women love to go shopping, even when they don’t end up buying anything? Why do men greet each other with insults? Why do women love to cuddle? Why don’t men like to talk... and why can’t women ever seem to stop?
Just like its two successful runs in two separate theaters last year, this “perfect date play” (BusinessWorld) is directed by theater veterans Michael Williams and Cathy Azanza-Dy, with stage actor/playwright/director Joel Trinidad returning as the titular caveman. Fresh from his success as performer and director of his own original musical comedy Breakups & Breakdowns (Upstart Productions) and the still-running Vegas-meets-Broadway extravaganza Kaos at Resorts World Manila (the script of which he also wrote), Trinidad brings his “dominant stage presence” (Manila Bulletin) and “wonderful comic timing” (BusinessWorld) to Defending the Caveman for an unprecedented third run, using psychology, sociology, and plain old observational humor to reveal the hidden mysteries of the opposite sex. (Or to at least explain why a guy can’t pick his underwear off the floor.)
